AddToAny - Joomla Plugin

E-mail Print PDF

AddToAny LogoI just cranked out a plugin for Joomla that uses the AddToAny Social Bookmarking API.

I felt a lot of the other social bookmarking plugins / extensions for Joomla were too heavy for something that should be really simple. So, I said 'Frack it!' and wrote my own.

Since it took me less than three hours to put together and test on my development web server at my home office, it's deployment here on EmmonsNet is the first test of what I consider to be its beta test.

For a demo of this plugin, just check the bottom of this article or any other article here at EmmonsNet.

A quick list of the AddToAny API features that it supports are:

  • 'Show Page Title' - passes the page title as well as the URL to the social bookmarking service.
  • 'Number Of Bookmarking Services' - set the number of bookmarking service icons visible.
  • 'Hide Intersecting Flash' - if this is enabled, it should hide flash elements on the page that it overlaps.
  • 'Official Feed E-Mailer' - the URL of the site feed (still working on the Subscribe Widget. That's comming soon!).
  • Section and Category Filtering - can disable this plugin for chosen sections and categories.
  • Alignment - control how the AddToAny widget aligns at the bottom of the article.
  • Button Size - can choose from five different Button / Widget sizes.

What shepherds do with too much spare time and a whole lot of LEDs

E-mail Print PDF

I guess shepherds get bored with the daily life of whistling at their dogs and pushing those sheep around. So what do they do? Before you head is hit with a deluge of colorful anecdotes about nervous sheep, why don't you watch this video of what some very clever shepherds from the UK did with their herd at night and a truck load of LEDs.

In a 'raw hide sort of way, there is something sort of Phillip K Dick about this.

Despite what Wired says - Mopeds are still NOT cool.

E-mail Print PDF

Mopeds are still NOT COOLMany of us are old enough to remember the gas crunch of the 70s. Among other things, it was one of the factors that precipitated the rise in popularity of a peddle started two wheeled contraption called the Moped. Everybody and his brother had one. It held a full gallon of gas (if you were lucky) and had almost as much power and your grandfathers John Deer lawn mower. I remember as a teen in California, you could not go a block without seeing on chained to a light pole or putting on by almost faster than I could run.

Then thankfully, they disappeared as quickly as Rick Springfields career. People like to claim that gas prices came back down and it made more sense to drive cars and real motorcycles than sputter along on a Vespa that you had to start with peddle power. But the real reason was that people finally started seeing what they looked like on these things and realized the truth.

Mopeds are NOT cool and on the absolute best of days - a really great form on birth control. Use one as your primary method of transportation around town and see how many dates you get.

Claudette - the third named tropical storm of the 2009 Atlantic Hurricane Season

E-mail Print PDF

Tropical Storm Claudette 2009-08-16

It was not even eight hours ago I saw that the National Hurricane Service announced the fourth tropical depression of the 2009 Atlantic Hurricane Season. Then as of the 1 PM CDT advisory issued, the depression had been upgraded to a tropcical storm named Claudette.

It's unlikely that this storm will have enough time over the warm waters of the Gulf Of Mexico to grow to hurricane strength. That is a very good thing for those who live in the Florida pan handle.

You can keep up to date on the latest advisories on this storm as well as Tropical Storms Ana and Bill by subscribing to the National Hurricane Center RSS Feeds.

Fancy yourself and Evil Genuis? Want to be a Super Villan? Why Linux Is For you

E-mail Print PDF

It pokes fun at a few of the stereotypes associated with Linux and computer geeks in general. It's just damned funny and I could not resist posting this 'Swith To Linux' video even though it has been around a couple years.

I've been working with Linux well over ten years now and I have still trying to figure out how to get my brain lasers into high earth orbit without the pentagon knowing about it.
